The District Attorney’s office is one of the most powerful influencers in the criminal punishment system. District Attorneys are the top law enforcement officers, meaning they decide who to prosecute, whether to bring changes, whether to request bail, and what sentences to recommend. The District Attorney is the most influential and powerful person in the local criminal injustice system because they have the power to prioritize safety and justice by working with local community-based organizations but often instead continue the injustice of the mass incarceration of Black and Brown people that have destroyed and separated families. However, the District Attorney is an elected official, meaning residents have the power and responsibility to vote for a DA who aligns with our values and also holds them accountable to the needs of our communities. We have the power to elect a District Attorney who understands the urgency to invest in rehabilitation services such as substance use programs and other alternatives to incarceration that will help heal our communities and keep them safe. It is crucial that our communities understand the power of the District Attorney because we have the power to influence how our communities are kept safe and change policies that have harmed our communities for far too long.
